D-Link DWL-G132 Wireless USB Adapter Review PDF E-mail

The D-Link DWL-G132 Wireless USB Adapter is a convenient way to connect any PC with a USB port (2.0 preferably) to a wireless network. This comes in really handy in those situations where running ethernet cable is a pain, all available expansion slots in the PC are filled, or you simply don't feel like messing around inside the case. In fact, in some scenarios you might prefer a product like the DWL-G132 because a USB extender allows you to position the unit for optimal performance.

USB 2.0 is ubiquitous now and this is one of the easiest and fastest ways to add Wi-Fi capability to a PC. With a maximum wireless signal rate of up to 108Mbps, the DWL-G132 includes support for WPA and 802.1x for enhanced data encryption and user authentication. The DWL-G132 Wireless USB Adapter can be used in peer-to-peer mode (ad-hoc) to connect directly to other 802.11b/g wirelessly enabled computers or in client mode (infrastructure) to communicate with other users through an access point or router.

We plugged the G132 into an Asus A8N-Premium board running on a Belkin Pre-N network. We removed the Belkin Pre-N wireless PCI card in the PC. Because the DWL-G132 adapter could be placed in an elevated position using the USB extender the performance was actually better than the Pre-N card. It's possible the the Pre-N card inside the PC was fighting with the myriad frequencies present inside the PC case that the USB tether was able to avoid or maybe just the 2 feet of elevation did the trick. At any rate, we were very impressed with the performance of the DWL-G132 and it's certainly priced right.
