LG VX8000 Review PDF E-mail
Mobile
Friday, 17 June 2005 00:00
The LG VX8000 is a very impressive phone right out of the box. It's just the right size and features the outstanding ergonomics of a typical LG flip phone. The VX8000 is a little bigger than the ubiquitous VX4400 and packs a whole new feature set including V CAST capability, Internet, 1.3MP camera with video, and a larger, better full color display. It's one of the best displays we've seen.

Sound quality is on par with the VX4400. Most people I talked to couldn't tell I was on a new phone and when I told them they simply said, 'yeah, you sound good.' After a couple of dropped calls in a known problem area using the VX 4400 I called one client back using the VX8000 and we managed to stay connected.

The camera on the VX 8000 takes decent photos. The VX8000 allow you to set the quality and size of the phone, ISO speed, brightness, color/sepia/black and white'etc. However, navigating the menu could quickly become tiresome. It's more likely you'll set it up once and forget it but it's nice to have the options. It would also be nice to be able to snap a few pics and decide what to do with them later. The VX 8000 wants an answer after each snap. Do you want to save, delete or send it'

The VX8000 has a very extensive menu. The good news is we were able to quickly figure out the navigation structure without referring to a manual. That's a pretty big achievement because this phone does a lot. The little ergonomic touches like slightly raising the 'okay' button in the middle of the keypad makes this phone easier to use while keeping your eyes on the road.

The big news is the V CAST and broadband capabilities of this phone. However, it may be a year before you can take advantage of the service around the country. Verizon's service is only available on 1/3 of its network. The first coverage areas include Atlanta, Austin, TX, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Dayton, Hartford, CT, Houston, Jacksonville, FL, Kansas City, Las Vegas, LA, Madison, WI, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, FL, Milwaukee, New Haven, CT, New Orleans, New York/Newark, NJ, Orange County, CA (of course), Orlando, FL, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Providence, RI, San Diego, Tampa, FL, Washington, D.C. and West Palm Beach, FL.

Broadband access promises average wireless speeds of 400-700 kbps. Verizon plans to rollout broadband access to 2/3 of its network by the end of 2005. The goal is to make 'hot spots' a thing of the past. For now, you'll have to hang with the kids in the OC to experience over 4,400 square miles of broadband coverage. Meanwhile, the rest of the country can jack-in at the local Starbucks or Borders.

Video quality on the phone is actually pretty good. Music videos, news, movie trailers and other mobile optimized video is just fine for passing the time in an airport or just kicking back playing with this new gadget. Captain Kirk would be proud.

We'll have more on the V CAST network and our experience with the Verizon service using the LG VX8000 soon. In the meantime, if you are looking for a new phone that will keep you connected in myriad ways the VX8000 will get it done.
